Building MyGolfShotZ a Little Differently
The underlying golf course data is often quite good, but no source is perfect. By combining these resources and adding community review and validation, we believe we can provide a reliable global course catalog without the substantial cost of trying to collect and maintain all of that information ourselves.
Keeping those costs down is important because we’re deliberately avoiding many of the ways golf apps are typically funded or monetized.
MyGolfShotZ is being built around a simple idea: create a useful golf app for recreational golfers around the world and make it available at a very modest cost.
We’re taking a somewhat different approach to making that possible.
We’ve designed MyGolfShotZ to keep its technology and infrastructure requirements relatively simple and efficient. We’re also taking a different approach to golf course information.
Rather than trying to build and maintain a worldwide golf course database ourselves, MyGolfShotZ brings together information from different sources. Apple Maps Places provide an established, maintained source for golf course locations and place information. Specialized Internet golf course data sources provide information such as scorecards, tees and GPS coordinates.
MyGolfShotZ brings those pieces together, and golfers who actually play the courses can review the information, make adjustments when needed, and help validate it through real on-course play.

No Ads. No Subscriptions. No Upsell.
We think those contributions should be rewarded.
That's the idea behind the MyGolfShotZ Community Founders Program.
We don’t want MyGolfShotZ to be a free version designed primarily to push golfers toward a premium version. We don’t want advertising competing for your attention. And we don’t want to continually try to sell you additional features, services, or merchandise.
Instead, our goal is to operate MyGolfShotZ efficiently and eventually ask golfers to pay a modest amount based on the rounds they save.
The MyGolfShotZ community is an important part of making that work.
During our founding rollout, we’re asking our earliest golfers to use the app, help us find problems, review and add courses, and improve the quality of course information.
So while MyGolfShotZ is free during the founding rollout, your participation now can help provide free saved-round use later.
We don’t have a fixed date for when that will change.
But you can start earning Round Tokens now.
As you play golf and help improve the MyGolfShotZ course catalog, qualifying activities can earn Round Tokens that stay with your account.
When MyGolfShotZ eventually begins using Round Tokens or Paid Rounds for saved rounds, the Round Tokens you’ve earned during the founding rollout will be available for you to use.
MyGolfShotZ is Free During the Founding Rollout
You don't need Round Tokens or Paid Rounds to save rounds during our founding rollout.
So while MyGolfShotZ is free during the founding rollout,
your participation now can help provide free saved-round use later.
There are some fairly comprehensive global golf course data sources that give us an important starting point, but course information isn’t always complete or accurate.
Tee information can be missing or outdated. GPS coordinates can need adjustment. Courses change over time.
MyGolfShotZ combines specialized golf course information with Apple Maps Places and tools that allow golfers to review the golf-specific information and help make it better.
When a course is added to the MyGolfShotZ community catalog, golfers can review important information such as tees and course locations and make adjustments when needed.
Actual play provides another important check.
Qualifying rounds played by MyGolfShotZ golfers at the course can help validate that course for the rest of the community.
Over time, the goal is a worldwide course catalog that benefits from three things working together: established place information, specialized golf course data, and the experience of golfers who actually play the courses.
That community-supported approach is also part of how we hope to keep MyGolfShotZ affordable.
A Global Course Catalog, Supported by Golfers

We also expect eventually to make Paid Rounds available through in-app purchase. Paid Rounds will provide another way to save rounds, but they are different from promotional Round Tokens: Paid Rounds are purchased and will not be transferable to another user.
Round Tokens are earned through qualifying participation in MyGolfShotZ.
We are also exploring ways to eventually allow golfers to share some of their earned Round Tokens with other golfers. That capability isn’t part of the initial version of MyGolfShotZ, and its rules haven’t yet been finalized.
What are Round Tokens

Round Tokens are promotional credits for future saved-round use in MyGolfShotZ.
During the founding rollout, you don’t need Round Tokens to save rounds. MyGolfShotZ is free to use.
We’re awarding Round Tokens now so golfers who participate and help us during this early stage can accumulate credits for future use.
Round Tokens awarded through the Community Founders Program aren’t cash or currency, can’t be redeemed for money, and aren’t currently available for purchase.
When we eventually begin using Round Tokens for saved rounds, earned Round Tokens can be used for those rounds.
The founding awards shown above are intentionally generous because our earliest users are helping us establish MyGolfShotZ and its community-supported course catalog.
Some awards can be earned together.
For example, if you play and save a valid 18-hole round in Shot Tracking mode at a course that still needs community validation, you could receive 60 Round Tokens for the round plus another 100 Round Tokens because your round helped validate the course.
The course contribution award works differently. If you review and add a course that later becomes validated by the community, you can receive the 200 Round Token award regardless of which qualifying golfers ultimately play the rounds that validate it.
The larger awards recognize activities that are especially useful during the founding rollout: helping establish, improve and validate the course catalog that other MyGolfShotZ golfers will use.
How You Can Earn Round Tokens
The Round Token awards associated with playing golf require a valid on-course round in Shot Tracking mode.
A valid on-course round is a round played and saved in Shot Tracking mode that meets MyGolfShotZ’s requirements for actual play at the golf course.
As you use Shot Tracking during a round, MyGolfShotZ uses locations recorded through normal shot-tracking activity to determine whether you were playing at or sufficiently near the course and its holes.
This allows MyGolfShotZ to distinguish qualifying on-course play from rounds entered or tested somewhere else without requiring a separate validation process from the golfer.
A valid on-course round can earn the normal Round Token play award. When the appropriate requirements are met, a full valid on-course round can also help validate a golf course and earn an additional award.
Score & Distance mode provides simpler scorekeeping and distance tools without Shot Tracking. Because it doesn’t collect the shot-location information needed to verify qualifying on-course play, rounds played in Score & Distance mode don’t earn play-based Round Token awards or contribute toward community course validation.
Valid On-Course Rounds and Shot Tracking
The golfer who originally reviewed and added a course can be one of those golfers, but doesn’t have to be.
One golfer cannot validate a course alone. At least two unique golfers must play and save qualifying full on-course rounds before the course becomes community validated.
Each qualifying golfer can receive the normal Round Token award for the round plus the additional award for playing a round that helps validate the course.
When the course reaches the required level of community validation, the golfer who originally reviewed the course information, made any needed adjustments, and added it can receive the additional course contribution award.
The original contributor receives that award regardless of which qualifying golfers ultimately played the rounds that validated the course.
How Community Course Validation Works
Newly added courses don’t immediately become community validated.
During the founding rollout, a course must receive qualifying full rounds from at least two unique MyGolfShotZ golfers before it becomes validated by the community.
For an 18-hole course, those qualifying validation rounds must be full 18-hole rounds played in Shot Tracking mode.

They’ve also helped MyGolfShotZ in several different ways: joining the community, playing real on-course rounds, reviewing and adding a course, and contributing to its community validation.
An Example
10 + 30 + 60 + 100 + 200 = 400 Round Tokens
Suppose a golfer creates a MyGolfShotZ account and receives 10 Round Tokens.
They play and save a valid 9-hole round in Shot Tracking mode and receive another 30.
Later they find a course that isn’t yet in the MyGolfShotZ community catalog. They review the available course information, make any needed adjustments, and submit the course for validation.
They then play and save a valid 18-hole round at that course in Shot Tracking mode.
They receive 60 Round Tokens for playing and saving the round and an additional 100 Round Tokens because their full on-course round helps validate the new course.
Another MyGolfShotZ golfer later plays and saves a qualifying 18-hole round there. That provides the second unique golfer required for community validation.
The course becomes validated, and the golfer who originally reviewed and added it receives another 200 Round Tokens.
In this example, the first golfer has earned:

Promotional Awards and Limits
The Community Founders Program uses a current promotional award schedule and a maximum promotional Round Token award level.
The current founding awards are the amounts shown above, and the current maximum is 1,000 promotional Round Tokens per user.
Whenever a promotional award is considered, MyGolfShotZ checks the award amount and promotional maximum in effect at that time. Current award amounts are always used to calculate new awards, even if a golfer previously received a different amount for the same type of activity.
The current promotional maximum is also checked before each award.
For example, if the promotional maximum is reduced in the future and you’ve already earned more than the new maximum, you keep the Round Tokens you’ve already legitimately earned. However, you won’t receive additional promotional awards while your promotional award total is at or above the current maximum.
Award amounts, promotional limits, eligibility requirements and course-validation requirements may change as the MyGolfShotZ community grows.
Why the Program Will Evolve
The founding awards are deliberately designed for the earliest stage of MyGolfShotZ.
Right now, every golfer who uses the app can help us learn. Every course that gets reviewed and validated helps establish the catalog. And the first golfers at a newly added course can make a particularly valuable contribution.
That will change as the community grows.
More courses will already be available and validated. More golfers will be available to help validate new courses. And we’ll have more experience with how people use MyGolfShotZ and how the Community Founders Program works in practice.
For those reasons, we expect promotional award amounts, promotional limits, eligibility rules and course-validation requirements to evolve over time.
There is no fixed end date for the founding award schedule.
We expect to communicate significant changes before they take effect. Changes to future promotional awards won’t reduce Round Tokens that have already been legitimately awarded to your account.
Keeping MyGolfShotZ Affordable
We’re designing the technology to operate efficiently. We’re combining established sources of golf course information with community review and validation rather than trying to independently create and maintain a worldwide golf course database.
And rather than charging a recurring subscription, we expect golfers eventually to use Round Tokens they’ve earned or Paid Rounds they’ve purchased when they save rounds.
If you don’t need to save another round, there isn’t a subscription continuing to run in the background.
Our goal is straightforward: build an app golfers enjoy using, operate it efficiently, work with the golf community to maintain useful course information around the world, and keep the cost of using MyGolfShotZ as modest as we reasonably can.

The Community Founders Program is part of a larger approach to how we’re building MyGolfShotZ.
We want golfers to have access to the complete MyGolfShotZ experience rather than dividing the app into free and premium feature tiers.
No Ads. No Subscriptions. No Upsell.
What Happens After the Founding Rollout?
We don’t know exactly when the founding rollout will end.
We’re deliberately starting MyGolfShotZ without requiring Round Tokens or Paid Rounds for saved rounds so we can concentrate first on improving the app, learning from real golfers, and establishing the community-supported course catalog.
As MyGolfShotZ grows, we expect the promotional award program to become less generous than it is during the founding period.
We also expect eventually to begin using Round Tokens for saved rounds and to make Paid Rounds available through in-app purchase.
Round Tokens you’ve earned during the founding rollout will then give you saved-round use without having to purchase those rounds.
That’s part of the reason we’re being generous with our earliest users. Golfers who help establish MyGolfShotZ and its course community are providing something valuable, and we’d like the Round Tokens they earn to provide something useful in return.
Looking Further Ahead
We have another idea we’d like to explore as the MyGolfShotZ community develops.
Eventually, we’d like to give golfers a way to share some of the Round Tokens they’ve earned with other golfers.
The idea is simple: if you’ve helped us build MyGolfShotZ and accumulated Round Tokens along the way, we’d like you to eventually be able to help someone else give MyGolfShotZ a try.
Paid Rounds would remain different. Because they are purchased for your own use, they would not be transferable.
Round Token sharing isn’t part of the initial version of the app, and we haven’t finalized how it will work.
For now, we’re concentrating on the first step:
building MyGolfShotZ with a community of golfers who play, contribute,
and help make the course catalog better for everyone who follows.
